The life of internet trends

Uncategorized – by Gabriela Zamora

On every social network there is always content that goes viral, capturing the public's attention for a specific period of time. This is known as a trend, and it can be anything from an audio clip, a song, a meme, a filter, and more.

Trends change frequently, with some disappearing and new ones emerging. Today, with all the speed that new technologies and the internet provide, an internet trend has a very short lifespan.

Generally, the life of a trend begins when some kind of content is created, whether a video, an audio clip, an image, or something else, which remains unknown for a while, perhaps a few days, until it starts to rise. This usually happens very quickly, with the content climbing all the way to the top, where it reaches the attention of thousands or millions of people who join in creating the same content, causing it to go viral and become established as a trend.

This peak can last a few weeks; however, nowadays a week is often an eternity for a trend. Typically, the life of this viral content lasts a few days until it is overused, making the public grow tired of the trend and start setting it aside. At this point the trend begins its final phase where, also very quickly, it dies, and users stop participating in it or using it, shifting their focus to the new rising trends.

The life of trends

It is very common for a lot of content to become a trend accidentally and without any planning, especially at a time when short-form content platforms that don't require much production, such as TikTok, are leading social media.

However, as has always been the case throughout human history, businesses and companies plan their marketing strategies by adapting to these trends and using them to their advantage to reach a wider audience. It is very important to remember that one of the keys to making this work properly is to join the trend immediately, or while it is still alive. If they plan to do it many days later, the trend will already be outdated and the business or company will waste the time and resources it invested in that content.
